Rhinoplasty in Beverly Hills
A primary rhinoplasty is nose reshaping surgery performed for the first time. Hopefully, you never need a secondary rhinoplasty, but this can occur if the original surgery was performed with poor technique. When seeking a plastic surgeon to perform a primary rhinoplasty, it is imperative that you choose right.
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that addresses the nose. This can be done for both cosmetic and functional reasons.
The nose structure is made up of cartilage, bone, tissue, and skin. Both the exterior and interior structure must be carefully altered – the removal of too much cartilage can lead to the structure collapsing later. When nose reshaping is performed correctly, every detail is addressed so the results are stable, balanced, and you are left with a nose that is a true enhancement to your facial features.
Choose Your Facial Plastic Surgeon Carefully
The last thing you want to have happen is to be left with a result that is uneven, unsightly, or collapses. A revision rhinoplasty (secondary rhinoplasty) can be a complex operation. Get your surgery performed by a top quality plastic surgeon – it matters.

How Does it Work?
A rhinoplasty can be performed with two different types of incisions. These are called a “closed rhinoplasty” and an “open rhinoplasty.” What incision will be used in your case? Only an in-person evaluation can reveal the type of technique that will produce the most attractive results. While many people seek a “scar-free” nose job, this may not be the incision type that will produce the results you envision. The difference, and why these two incision types are used, are as follows:
- Open rhinoplasty: An open rhinoplasty involves placing a tiny incision in the columella (the small strip of skin and tissue between the nostrils). This allows for more access to the nose structure within, and the ability to alter nasal bones and cartilage with a higher level of accuracy. The tiny scar, once healed, is virtually invisible to others. An open rhinoplasty allows for very precise changes to be made in nose structure and leaves the nose structure more stable by allowing for adding sutures in grafts or to the existing cartilage.>
- Closed rhinoplasty: For less extreme changes to the nose structure, a closed rhinoplasty may be appropriate. This surgical technique can be workable for patients who want minimal alteration to the nose structure, rather than a more thorough alteration.>
In either case, it is the skill and artistry of your surgeon is the crucial point – far more important than which type of incision will be used to create the changes. Dr. Torkian is recognized for his exceptional skill in facial plastic surgery, and a leader in advanced surgical techniques for nose reshaping. What are the benefits of a primary rhinoplasty?>
The benefits of the surgery can be functional, with improved breathing. Patients who have experienced nose trauma may have a damaged structure within the nose that requires correction. Beyond the function of the nose, the greatest benefit is the change in how you feel about your appearance. If you have struggled with a nose that you feel makes you look less attractive, having it reshaped to a more defined, balanced shape, size, and projection can make you feel empowered, confident, and attractive.>
"Truly, I cannot say enough amazing things about Dr. Torkian and his staff! I came to see him after years of hating my nose after a horse accident when I was 16. I was terrified to get help and terrified I wouldn't choose the right doctor. I met with several of "THE TOP" doctors and didn't feel right with any of them. He not only made me feel like he knew what he was doing, but he was THE FIRST doctor to actually listen to MY concerns and issues instead of just talking about what he thinks. I decided to set a date and I went for it! Martha and Olivia are part of his team, and truly, I want to hug all three of them every time I see them. It has been 2 months now since I had surgery and I am very happy with what I see so far! I absolutely LOVE the doctor and his staff and will be forever grateful for them!"Kelle D.
Recovery After Rhinoplasty
After a rhinoplasty, you can expect some downtime. However, most of our patients report it was less stressful and painful than expected. The first few days are the most difficult, as you will experience the maximum bruising and swelling in these early stages.
You will feel as if you have a stuffy nose, as the swelling affects breathing function during this period. You will have pain medication to help you feel comfortable during this time. Set aside two weeks to recover – you probably won’t need that much time, and many people are ready to go back to work after just one week.
Your nose structure will be bandaged to keep it stable while it heals, which will be removed in about a week. You may feel congested for about a few days after surgery, which will improve every day. Maximum swelling is at about three days. You will see bruising around your eyes for a few days – this is normal and soon disappears.
Your second week of recovery is much easier, with swelling reducing and your new nose structure starting to be revealed. The incision will become virtually undetectable after about three months, and your nose will continue to improve for as long as a year as residual swelling diminishes fully.
Am I a Candidate?
If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your nose or nostrils, you are definitely a candidate for a primary rhinoplasty. It is well worth your time to explore the entire process and get answers to all of your questions about the procedure, what to expect, what it will look like after surgery, recovery time, and any other concerns – and Dr. Torkian will take all the time needed to answer your questions.
Will there be Scars?
If your nose surgery involved an incision, you will have tiny, almost invisible scar beneath your nose, on the columella, the tiny strip of tissue and cartilage between the nostrils. The scar, when the incision and closing is performed by our double board-certified plastic surgeon, will heal beautifully and will be impossible for others to see.
Will it Look Natural?
You have a unique facial structure. For your nose to look natural after rhinoplasty requires a high level of artistry and technique. The idea is that you look like yourself – just dramatically better. Dr. Torkian has garnered a reputation for excellence in nose surgery and takes great pride in his ability to create a very natural, balanced, resculpted nose – that truly enhances your other features.
