Rhinoplasty Scars

In considering rhinoplasty, many patients are rightfully concerned about the resultant rhinoplasty scar. While certain endoscopic techniques leave no trace of a visible scar, those may not be the best ways to get the desired results. For this reason, Dr. Torkian performs many rhinoplasties with what’s known as an open incision. This technique allows him to fully visualize the underlying nasal structure and make virtually any change necessary.

As a facial plastic surgery specialist who has been delivering rhinoplasties for decades, Dr. Torkian is trusted by his patients and peers to correctly decide the best possible technique for every individual case. To learn more about the two primary types of rhinoplasty incisions and their resultant scars, please read more below.

Rhinoplasty incision options

In delivering rhinoplasty, Dr. Torkian chooses from two incision options. Each of these present distinct advantages, and the incision used is based on your unique nasal structure, as well as the exact issue to be corrected. The incision options are as follows:

Open or External Approach

A newer approach, an open rhinoplasty is done with an incision made on the underside of the nose between the nostrils. It allows for full visualization of the underlying nasal structure and a greater array of correctional techniques.

Closed or Endonasal Approach

A more traditional technique, a closed rhinoplasty is performed with incisions placed inside the nostrils. Once these incisions are made, Dr. Torkian uses a series of specialized instruments to reshape the nose without exposing the entire nasal structure.

While the closed incision may sound like a more attractive option, patients frequently require the open incision to ensure best surgical outcomes in their particular case. If such patients are worried about a visible scar following surgery, they can rest assured that incisions used in an open or external rhinoplasty heal with minimal scarring.

In general, patients will see a reddish area for the first few days following surgery. Within one week, the sutures will dissolve or be removed, and the incision will be on its way to perfect healing. The redness improves within six to eight weeks, and the thin v-shaped scar will blend with the surrounding skin within six months. In fact, Dr. Torkian is so talented at closing his incisions that many patients cannot tell where their incision was after only two weeks following their surgery.
