Do you have hooded eyelids? While this feature is beloved by some, for others, hooded eyelids are something they’d prefer they didn’t have. It can make eye makeup complicated, and in some cases, it can affect peripheral vision. A blepharoplasty is a procedure in which excess skin and fat are removed, and the muscles and tissues of the eyelid are tightened. Find out more about this procedure and whether it can help your hooded eyelids.

Benefits of blepharoplasty for hooded eyelids

Hooded eyelids can be very beautiful, but for some, that’s a feature they would like to remove. Hooded eyelids can make putting on eye makeup, like getting a perfect cat-eye look, tricky, if not pointless. Hooded eyelids can sometimes also obstruct vision, partially covering the field of vision. A blepharoplasty lifts the eyelid, giving you a visible upper eyelid area, and improving your vision, if it is affected by hooded eyelids.

The upper eyelid surgery procedure

So what happens during a blepharoplasty, specifically upper eyelid surgery? It is a minor surgical procedure that can be performed in the office setting with local anesthesia where appropriate. It’s often performed with lower eyelid surgery if needed, for rejuvenation purposes, but can be performed alone as well.

Upper eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure and generally takes between 45 – 90 minutes to perform, depending on whether one or both eyelids are being operated on. During the surgery, your doctor will make a small incision within a natural crease of your eyelid. It allows for a less obvious line as your incision is healing post-surgery. Your doctor will remove excess fat from within, as well as tighten up the eyelid skin.

Upper eyelid surgery recovery

With upper eyelid surgery, you will be able to go home the same day. As with any plastic surgery procedure, some bruising, swelling, and redness are expected after surgery. Some mild pain is expected as well, but taking pain medication can help. Your doctor will likely advise you to avoid exercise and strenuous work for some time after the procedure to allow your eyelids to heal properly. After a few weeks, the eyelid(s) should heal up.
