Skincare is often only associated with women, but a consistent and healthy skincare routine is something that men and women can benefit from. Whether you have dry or oily skin, sensitive or normal, a regular skincare routine is a must for keeping your skin healthy and vibrant.

The Best Skincare for Men

The best skincare routine is one that you can commit to do regularly in the morning and at night before you go to sleep. No matter what your skin type, consistency will help you maintain the health of your skin and improve specific concerns you might have such as dry spots, scarring, and more. Here are the four basic steps that are the foundation to a man’s face care routine:

1. Cleanse. With any skincare products, you may have to experiment a bit before finding a product that works for your skin. In the warmer months, opt for lighter, gel-based cleansers. In the colder months, a cream-based cleanser will help lock in moisture. Use a cleanser to clean your face twice a day, once in the morning and once before bedtime.

2. Apply serums. In the morning, serums containing peptides and hyaluronic acid work to keep skin looking glowing and fresh. At nighttime, a serum with retinol works well.

3. Moisturize. Whether you have dry skin or oily skin, moisturizing is a can’t-miss step. Lightweight, gel-based moisturizers are a good option for oily skin, while heavier cream-based moisturizers work well for dry skin.

4. Apply sunscreen. In the mornings, it is important to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or above before you head out. Make sure that you apply sunscreen to all parts of your body that will be exposed to the sun, and give the sunscreen at least 15 minutes to activate. When choosing a sunblock product, pick a sunscreen that has broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

Men’s Skincare Tips

In addition to a regular skincare regimen, there are a few things you can do to help your skin stay healthy, firm, and vibrant. Drinking plenty of water each day hydrates your skin from the inside out. Particularly during the summer months, we recommend carrying around a water bottle so you can stay hydrated throughout the day. It is recommended to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. If you sweat a lot or do a strenuous workout, you should consume even more water.

Changing your pillowcases at least once a week can also help with your skin health. Pillowcases build up oils, dirt, and sweat from daily use, so it’s a good idea to regularly wash and change pillowcases.

If you have specific skin concerns such as acne, dark spots, or scarring, talk to your doctor for recommended treatments and products. Your doctor can also advise you if a product should be applied in the morning or at nighttime. Oftentimes, products that target acne, for example, make the skin more sensitive to sunlight and should be used with sunscreen or only applied at night.

Overall, establishing a skincare routine for men is about finding a routine that you stick to each day. The four steps – cleansing, applying serums, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen – are a great foundation to build out from. After that, you can incorporate other products that target specific skin concerns.
